Subfascial Breast Implants

Using advanced, modern techniques makes today’s breast augmentation results better than ever.

One of the many exciting breast surgery innovations, one of the techniques Dr. Bennett C. Yang uses is SUBFACIAL BREAST IMPLANT SURGERY.

This is becoming a popular option for breast implant placement. Previously, breast implants were positioned over or under your pectoral muscle. Subfascial implant placement offers our patients the unique benefits of achieving a better breast augmentation result.

As the name suggests, the technique behind subfascial augmentation sets the treatment apart from more traditional breast augmentation.

Subfascial Breast Implant Placement

Breast implant placement is a very important decision during subfacial breast augmentation surgery as it can significantly impact the end result, recovery time, and any potential complications.

During subfacial breast surgery, the implant is placed beneath a thin layer called the fascia, which acts like a supportive sling around the chest muscle. This placement offers several advantages: Natural appearance: The fascia provides a smooth, supportive layer for the implant, mimicking the natural support of breast tissue.

“The subfascial method is the best compromise option, in my opinion. It has little pain, fast recovery, and no animation deformity. It looks more natural than a subglandular implant. It has a more lifting effect than a submuscular implant. The limitation of a subfascial implant is size. The subfascial space is tight and limited to implants under 400 cc. However, for most patients, that is more than enough implant volume,” says Dr. Bennett C. Yang.

Looking Natural...
Consider Subfascial Breast Augmentation Surgery

What Makes Subfascial Breast Augmentation Unique? By adding an extra layer of support, subfascial fascia placement can help hide the breast implant edges in patients with thin or moderate breast tissue. The results are a smooth, natural-looking slope at the upper portion of the breast.

What Sets This Method Apart From Other Traditional Techniques?

A More Comfortable Recovery: With subfascial breast implant placement, there is less disruption to the pectoralis muscle, which can lead to a more comfortable recovery. Many patients experience less tightness and discomfort compared to a fully submuscular breast surgery.

Less Breast Implant Distortion: Subfascial breast implants are generally less likely to shift with chest muscle movement in active patients who are in the gym, routinely doing upper-body workouts, or playing sports. Submuscular breast implants can appear to move sometimes when the pectoralis muscles are flexed, creating an undesirable effect known as “animation deformity.”

A Balanced Natural Result: Subfascial breast augmentation provides a beautiful fullness and projection without appearing overly “done.” Subglandular breast implants sometimes appear more pronounced, whereas subfascial breast implants add a layer that helps to create soft, natural contours and a more youthful appearance.

Benefits of Subfascial Breast Augmentation Surgery

Subfascial breast implant surgery has a few advantages over traditional subglandular and submuscular implants.

The recovery time for Subfascial breast implant surgery is generally shorter than submuscular and there is a lower risk of implant displacement. Subfascial breast implant placement also carries a lower risk of capsular contracture than a subglandular placement.

Your Subfascial Breast Implant Results

Something to keep in mind is that, with each breast implant surgical approach having its own advantages, after reviewing the recovery and results of each type of breast implant surgery, subglandular implants are often easier to see and feel because they are placed just below the skin’s surface.

Submuscular implants can create a more natural-looking appearance over time.  However, the procedure requires separating the muscle from the chest to place them, which means much more recovery time for the patient.

Breast implants placed below the muscle can take several weeks to “settle”, leaving patients with seemingly high and large implants until the muscle reshapes itself and hopefully settles into a natural position.

Subfascial breast augmentation offers our patients the natural look they want without a long, lengthy recovery. This approach places the breast implant right below the fascia – an extremely thin yet highly durable tissue found on nearly every muscle within your body.

Once placed, your implants are permanently anchored in their final position, with no need for the “settling” process, which reduces recovery time.

Subfascial Breast Implant Placement Questions

There is a comprehensive 2025 study comparing 193 patients that found compelling evidence supporting subfascial breast implant placement advantages:

Dramatically Lower Capsular Contracture Complications

  • Subfascial: 1.1% capsular contracture rate
  • Subpectoral: 5.2% capsular contracture rate
  • This represents a statistically significant 79% reduction

Capsular contracture complications remain the leading cause of breast augmentation revision surgery. When choosing to have subfascial breast implant placement, you can significantly reduce this risk.

Reduced Lateral Implant Malposition

  • Subfascial: 8.8% malposition rate
  • Subpectoral: 23.4% malposition rate
  • 62% reduction in lateral displacement

Lateral malposition causes asymmetry and often requires corrective breast surgery. The subfascial plane provides superior anatomic support, dramatically reducing the risk of this devastating complication.

Elimination of  the Double Bubble Deformity

  • Subfascial: 0% double bubble deformity
  • Subpectoral: 3.7% double bubble occurrence

The double-bubble deformity occurs when an unnatural fold forms below the implant, a condition that is notoriously difficult to correct and often requires multiple breast revision surgeries.

Your breasts will have a look and feel that is a lot more natural than with submuscular breast implant placement. When the swelling goes down, and the implant settles into its final place, the final results of subfascial breast augmentation may not be clear for a few weeks or months.

Subfascial breast augmentation was originally developed to reduce the risks of capsular contracture while decreasing the postoperative pain experienced by many patients after subpectoral augmentation.

This technique was pioneered in Brazil by Dr. Graf and others, and has recently gained global interest in the aesthetic world.
