What is an Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)?
The reshaping of upper arm by skin and fat removal is known as an arm lift (brachioplasty). This surgical procedure can tighten and reduce the sagging skin on the underside of the arm and remove excess fat. Commonly called the “batwing” surgery, this procedure is often done after major weight loss. Losing weight is a great accomplishment but often leaves loose hanging skin that doesn’t fully tighten up. No amount of exercise, skin creams, or lasers will tighten the skin the way surgery does.
If your arm skin hangs down when you lift your arms by your sides, it can be stubborn and stay even after weight loss. Considering an arm lift usually involves a combination of liposuction and excision of excess skin.
With age or excessive weight loss some patients see the skin of their upper arms starting to droop and sag. Even with exercise, the muscles of the upper arm can be improved but it will not tighten the loose, excess skin lacking elasticity. Having an arm lift (brachioplasty) procedure can remove the excess skin and fat, helping them to appear thinner and more toned.
After Arm Lift Surgery
It’s important to be healthy before and after surgery. Eating well, NOT
smoking are key factors in having a successful outcome. Although arm lift surgery can improve the appearance of your upper arm it does leave a scar. The procedure takes about 2 hours to complete. Most patients will need 1-2 weeks off from work for recovery and about 1-2 months out of the gym. The results are immediate. There is some bruising and swelling initially. Patients will need to have arm wraps or sleeves for the first 6 weeks after surgery to help control swelling.
